How Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) works ?

Tricyclic drugs (TCAs) (they are called tricyclic because of their chemical structure, which comprises 3 chains) work by preventing reuptake of norepinephrine or serotonin by the forst neuron's terminal. The rationale is that if depression is linked to low levels of one of the neurotransmitters in the brain, then preventing reuptake means more of the neurotransmitter will remain in the synapse to ensure it stimulates the second, so on.
