How to reduce and overcome stress in depression

When the body is under stress, the brain activates the autonomic nervous system in a bid to help us cope. This primitive response involves the release of adrenaline, which stimulates the delivery of oxygen to the brain and muscles., preparing them for action by increasing the heart and breathing rate. But if adrenaline and cholesterol are released and not used up , instead of fighting or running away all these actions take place in the body when you are sedentary - as so often happens if you get stressed - then unpleasant symptoms result - the classic sign of stress.

Symptoms of stress include -

  • chest pain
  • diarrhea
  • headaches
  • tiredness
  • changes to the appetite
  • dry mouth
  • inability to concentrate
  • poor memory

Stress-reducing and relaxation techniques can help reduce the heart rate and lower high blood pressure. Even very simple stress relieving technique will help, such as -

  • Take some deep breaths - breathe in through the nostrils, to the count of five, hold for 2 seconds, breathe out to the count of five.
  • Create some peace and quiet for yourself - for for walk, read a book.
  • Close your eyes and visualize a calming scene, such as walking by a stream on a summer's day.
  • Have a good stretch - raise your arms and feel the stretch in your body from your fingertips to your toes.
