Psychodynamic Counselling or Psychotherapy for depression treatment

Although the term is used differently by different people, Psychodynamic counselors tend to belong more to the Freudian school, working from the premise that our unconscious reveals itself in dreams, slips of the tongue, remarks we may say but then claim we did not mean, physical symptoms, and so on.

The depressed person is encouraged to express everything they are feeling and thinking in order to uncover unconscious thoughts and have insights into how the past impinges on present behavior - the idea is that gradually as you become more aware, you can shake off the past and outdated ways of thinking, and free yourself up to be happier in the present. This types of therapy tends to be long term - some people find it very helpful, others find it less useful.
