This is a complex area. The main group of drugs for treating Schizophrenia is the anti psychotic drugs. They have an effect on the nerve cells in the brain. Activity in brain requires that the nerve cells can influence each other. They do this by releasing tiny quantities of neurotransmitter or clinical messengers that crosses the tiny gaps between the cells. The drug used in Schizophrenia treatment affect these chemical messengers. They all seem to act on a messenger called dopamine. Anti psychotic drugs used in Schizophrenia reduce the amount of dopamine at the end of the nerve cells. and this may be how they have their effect in Schizophrenia Treatment.
