Manic Depression - Manic Depressive Psychosis Disorder

Manic depression is also known as bipolar disorder. It is a complicated brain disorder that causes shifts in a person's mood or ability to function.

Who gets Manic Depression

Inheritance or genes play some part in the development of bipolar affective disorder. Although women tend to more susceptible to depression, a more equal number of both men and women are diagnosed with manic depression. There does seem to be a genetic component to manic depression - the children of people with bipolar depression have a 5-15 percent of chance of experiencing it.

Manic Depression Treatment

The most common treatment for manic depression is a drug called lithium. It cannot cure the condition, but can control and help to prevent the worst symptoms. Treatment has a number of important components -

  • Medication usually has an important part to play, both in treating attacks of depression or mania, and also in preventing further episodes.
  • Psychological treatments are important in helping the sufferer through illness episodes, recovery and in preventing relapse.
  • Sometimes admission to hospital is necessary during severe bouts of mood disturbance to ensure a safe environment.

Manic depression unfortunately is incurable and people who suffer from it will have to deal with it throughout their life. Of course, medication and therapy help to a great extent as is the continuous and unstinted support of spouses, family and friends. However, do not be kidded about it. Manic depression is tough to handle and it will take a lot of courage and strength to keep yourself on the right track.
