Depression in Mid Life- Causes, Treatment

We have all heard the term mid life crisis and it has perhaps become a bit of a joke, yet depression in mid-life os a debilitating illness. Adult women are twice as prone to depression as men.

Rates of major depression in mid-life are highest among married women, but - interestingly - higher in men who are single, widowed and divorced.

Factors that trigger depression in mid-life

Depression in mid-life can be triggered by many events

  • People often move house
  • Change jobs
  • Marriage break up
  • Parents become ill and may need caring for
  • Children grow up and flee the nest, leaving an empty void
  • Parents and friends may grow old and die
  • Decline in physical appearance
  • Menopause in women
  • Prospect of old age

Both antidepressants and cognitive behavior therapy have been shown to be effective in treatment of depression in mid life.
